Section 121 Exclusion: The Basics
If you sell your primary residence, Section 121 may let you keep the gain tax-free:
- Single: up to $250,000
- Married filing jointly: up to $500,000
The 2-Out-Of-5-Year Rule
To qualify, you generally need:
- Ownership: own the home for at least 2 years
- Use: live in it as your primary residence for at least 2 years
- Those 2 years must fall within the 5 years before the sale
